7 Things to do in Manchester this Christmas

Manchester has so much going on this year, with festive activities taking place all across the city. Events are booking up quickly, so it’s time to get your skates on if you’ve not booked anything yet!

1. Backyard Cinema at Depot Mayfield

Movie lovers, this one is for you. For a limited 10-week run, Backyard Cinema’s immersive 330-capacity indoor winter cinema will be on the platform of Depot Mayfield. Audiences will be taken on a magical journey through tunnels of trees and magical doors that lead to the Enchanted Forest and home of the Lost Theatre. Curl up on giant beanbags, grab yourself a cocktail and enjoy your movie of choice. Backyard cinema will be screening a mixture of new releases, cult classics and Christmas favourites.

2. Miracle on Cross Street

Manchester’s grown-up grotto is a bar experience like no other. Expect OTT decor, a cosy fireplace and as many mince pies as you can handle. Tickets cost £15 per person, which includes a mulled wine or Irish cream on arrival.

3. Manchester Christmas Markets

Manchester’s Christmas Markets are now open! Get in the festive spirit as you explore over 220 stalls across the city centre selling unique gifts, foodie favourites and winter tipples.

4. Skate Manchester at Cathedral Gardens

Skate Manchester’s outdoor ice rink has a brand-new ice path this year, so you can glide merrily around the twinkling Christmas tree whilst listening to festive music. Oh, and don’t worry about the British weather spoiling your skate – the rink has a roof!

5. The Curious Teepee in Spinningfields

The Curious Teepee, set in The Oast House’s courtyard, is one of Manchester’s most atmospheric winter venues. With fire pits, faux fur throws, festive fairy lights and warming drinks, it’s the perfect spot to rest your feet after some Christmas shopping.

Check out Heaton Park’s Christmas light trail for a family-friendly adventure. The award-winning Lightopia has designed a new route this year, with dazzling illuminations and an immersive water show.

7. Cruise with Father Christmas at Salford Quays

There are still a few spaces left for the Santa Cruise taking place on the Manchester Ship Canal. The hour-long trip with Father Christmas and his elves includes mulled wine and mince pies for the adults, cookies and juice for the children and a special gift from the grotto.
